An evolution in track-structure dynamic analysis

High speed train lines can pose increased risk to nearby structures through ‘dynamic excitation’, particularly where longer trains will be used. When this is coupled with a requirement for a greater variety of axle configurations, it means engineers must spend more time on both design and validation of those designs. But thanks to our pioneering software, Mabel 2.0, we’re able to analyse the dynamic response of a structure for 20 different train types running at 50 different speeds. “Bringing engineering and digital skillsets together has allowed us to push Mabel to the edge of the possible in the field of dynamics,” says Juan Trueba, a principal engineer in our multidisciplinary team. In the UK, these advances have enabled us to maximise opportunities for design optimisation on High Speed 2, resulting in validation that is so fast it can be carried out in tandem with design iterations rather than afterwards, resulting in a far more efficient structural design process. Meanwhile, improvements in digital analysis mean faster assessment of the long-term effects of track stress on bridges. These advances have enabled us to maximise opportunities for design optimisation on HS2, and the consequent size reductions on structural sections have brought materials savings without any compromise in performance.
