Design once, use often

The scale of HS2 presents a vast opportunity for standardisation due to the quantity of new structures required along 225km of new high speed rail line between London and Crewe. The 132 bridges, 10 viaducts, five flyovers, 150 access and maintenance staircases, and 25 culverts, offer a once in a generation chance to develop standardised design solutions on this scale. To make the most of this opportunity we have created a library of ‘smart objects’ designed for use in a building information modelling environment. The library allows designers to simply ‘select and place’ the required components into their engineering models. These can then be optimised and used repeatedly, leading to a range of benefits including savings on time and cost, all while increasing quality. For example, the aggregated time efficiencies from using our HS2 Smart Object Library to create 3D models for bridges, structures and MEP components amounts to hundreds of design hours. This has led to savings of between £100,000 and £150,000 each month – worth approximately £3M over two years. And critically, libraries such as this can be applied to any project, anywhere in the world.
