Future-ready cities for south-east Asia

Digging deep to guard Doha from climate risk

Delivering the Musaimeer Pumping Station and Outfall Tunnel in Qatar, on time and on budget, was a test of programme management, our technical ingenuity and the project’s adherence to sustainability principles. Lying 15m beneath the seabed, the 10.2km outfall tunnel – the world’s longest for discharging ground and surface water offshore – will protect Doha from flooding and future climate risks. One critical contribution was our comprehensive engagement in the selection of a suitable tunnel boring machine (TBM) that could drive through areas featuring high levels of hydrostatic pressure from the sea. The client agrees with us that our TBM knowledge was key to meeting the schedule, with the tunnel completed 58 days early. Our project team also used all possible techniques to accelerate the construction programme, including training colleagues in new ways of working, such as in the use of prefabricated construction elements for the pump stations. It’s left a legacy, too, with more than 100 of our staff and our client’s trained to use building information modelling (BIM) tools. This has helped to identify potential problems early in the design phase – reducing waste and rework. And all the while, construction has been kept in line with the most stringent environmental standards to protect marine life. The project achieved compliance with the international sustainability rating scheme CEEQUAL, which was a major achievement for the project – and a first in Qatar.
