Digital innovation to cut cost and carbon in wastewater treatment

We are leading the way on making wastewater infrastructure more efficient and sustainable, with a groundbreaking project at the Rosedale treatment plant in Auckland, New Zealand. Our client, Watercare, can now more tightly manage both energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, thanks to our innovative solution which takes the application of digital twin technology to a new level. The twin, an accurate virtual model of the plant continuously updated by live performance data, features visual dashboards and provides instantaneous readouts of operational cost data, data which would otherwise be manually calculated monthly – a huge benefit to cost management. The dashboards, built using our Moata digital platform, also show emissions data, revealing relationships between cost and carbon that will help optimise wastewater treatment across the industry. What makes the system’s accuracy exceptional is our pioneering ‘soft sensors’, designed to quickly flag when physical sensors need recalibrating. They were created using a combination of biological, machine learning and statistical modelling, based on data from the physical probes. We initially developed the twin to commission a new bioreactor, but soon realised that a comprehensive, intelligent digital twin would have multiple benefits. With improved sensor reliability and enhanced data, it could provide new insights into how to reduce operational cost and carbon and improve the plant’s whole-life performance.
