Expanding public transit for a growing Seattle

Seattle is undergoing one of the largest public transit extension programmes in the US. Under the latest (ST3), operator Sound Transit will deploy $54bn of voter-approved funding to more than double the size of the Central Puget Sound region’s light rail network by 2040, from 80km (50 miles) to 187km (116 miles). The region stretches from Everett in the north to Tacoma in the south and is growing. Expansion of light rail is crucial to providing transportation options and for reducing pollution and emissions. The expansion of the system has been carefully planned to maximise the availability of transit services to underserved communities. ST3 is the most ambitious upgrade to the network yet and comes as phase two (ST2) – a 48km (30 miles) extension – nears completion. We have worked alongside Sound Transit for more than 20 years, helping the young and expanding agency as a consultant on rail systems and infrastructure to deliver 11 projects, five of which are still underway. More than that, we have become a trusted partner, providing support across the agency’s portfolio in areas including systems integration, handover to operations, and support for the establishment of an asset management programme. We are also working with the client to harness the social benefits of expansion, including commissioning the services of local businesses owned and run by disadvantaged groups.
