Pipeline to the future

In the UK, 85% of homes use natural gas, a fossil fuel and non-renewable resource, as a main fuel source. So, for the country to achieve its net-zero aims, it is essential to transition to less polluting sources of energy. Redcar Hydrogen Community is one of two projects in the north of England that hope to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen for domestic use utilising existing natural gas pipelines. Commissioned by Northern Gas Networks, our engineers are drawing on expertise gained from work on other hydrogen projects as well as oil and gas pipelines to design a new high pressure hydrogen network to supply Redcar. Hydrogen will be stored at high pressure in an underground salt cavern, as well as in above-ground tanks, then decompressed to a suitable pressure for injection into the gas grid. Work on this high-profile project will require existing standards and codes for natural gas networks to be revisited, to ensure safety and continuity of supply. We were selected because of our extensive local knowledge, acquired through the delivery of gas and renewable energy infrastructure projects in Teesside, northeast England. If the project gets the go-ahead, some 2000 homes and businesses in Teesside could be among the first in the UK to be powered by green hydrogen from 2025 for a duration of two years.
