Taking out carbon in the Caribbean

The decarbonisation of even a small country is a mammoth task. So, when the government of Barbados decided it wanted to move to a renewables based energy system within a decade, it realised it had to draft in some help. Our team took on the job of devising a framework that laid out a range of pathways for how Barbados could move towards its clean energy future. The work involved liaising with government, industry and other stakeholders across several sectors, such as tourism, considering for example the impact of cruise liners, which are important to the economy of the island but also require significant amounts of energy and cause emissions. It meant collecting and curating data and predictions from a myriad of sources and distilling all this into a workable analysis. It also required us to innovate and break new ground with industry digital modelling software. And it meant presenting our client with a comprehensive proposal that outlined the costs and benefits of a variety of solutions. The importance of what our experts set out to achieve cannot be overestimated. If taken forward, this work could transform the small island nation and make it a regional leader in the global energy transition – as well as improving its resilience to natural disasters.
